When I made a request for a cash deposit at a local branch I was informed that the 'transfer system was down' and advised to go the nearest neighbouring branch before it closed. Though I specifically then enquired, whether I was likely to encounter the same problem at this neighbouring branch, the bank teller assured me that "no you should go, their transfer system WILL be functioning". However, at this neighbouring branch I had to wait at least 20 minutes for a simple ID photocopy despite there being a complete absence of any customers, only to be then told that, in fact their 'transfer system' as well as that of at ALL branches 'was down' as the 'malfunction' had occurred at the central bank. The bank teller acknowledged that I had been misinformed and that I would have to return tomorrow. As I proceeded to leave, he then informed me that I had been afforded a 'favour' as the manager would arrange for a manual transfer !! Is there some reason that this would NOT be a routine alternative in the event of an banking electronic systems failure, rather than some sort of 'favour'? It wasn't as if the transfer service was for 'free'- I had to pay a full requisite deposit charge, though the deposit I had made, was for charity !! All in all, it was a pathetic and disappointing service that I encountered. I don't know what kind of top-down training is delivered at this bank but the behaviours I witnessed from the staff were apathy,unprofessionalism, pretentiousness, rudeness and disorderly conduct. No courtesy or apology was offered. It was absolutely ridiculous that a straightforward banking procedure was turned into some kind of 'extra'-ordinary task for them ! Shouldn't a nationwide bank be obliged to have an active update on its website if its electronic transaction system is crashed so a customer knows transactions are currently NOT being undertaken ? It would be pertinent, it seems, to advise the charity, to change their account to a different bank with a superior customer service reputation that I myself, thankfully subscribe to. It operates in Pakistan but seems untainted by the shoddy behaviour I encountered at Habib Bank.

Though it is heard that HBL is aggressively perusing to start branchless banking at earlier, however it appears that Branchless Banking services from HBL won’t surface before May-June 2012. In fact HBL is currently in process of inviting agents to become their retailors to offer branchless banking services across the country. Without mentioning the total number of agents they require, HBL has asked interested individuals to apply to become HBL branchless banking agents.
