Why Wells Fargo has the routing numbers it does
Wells Fargo is the clearest example of a bank that has consolidated. After the 2008 Wachovia acquisition it spent years collapsing dozens of legacy Norwest, First Union, Wachovia and regional Wells Fargo routing numbers into a single ACH number used nationwide, so for most customers the "which state did I open my account in?" question no longer changes the answer. The Federal Reserve directory still lists a handful of separate Wells Fargo entries — largely wire and legacy-charter records — but the everyday direct-deposit number is now uniform across the branch network.

Is the Wells Fargo wire routing number the same as the ACH number?
Not always. ACH routing numbers move direct deposits and bill payments over the automated clearing house, usually settling in one to three business days. Wire routing numbers move same-day funds over Fedwire. Of the 136 numbers the Federal Reserve registers to Wells Fargo Bank, N.A., 3 are Fedwire-eligible and 133 are ACH-only. Using an ACH-only number for an incoming wire is one of the most common reasons transfers are returned.
What is the Wells Fargo SWIFT code?
Wells Fargo publishes the SWIFT/BIC code WFBIUS6S for international transfers. SWIFT codes are not held in the Federal Reserve routing directory, so we cannot verify this against the Fed the way we verify routing numbers — confirm it with the bank before an overseas sender uses it.
