Why PNC Bank has the routing numbers it does
PNC has grown almost entirely by acquisition — Riggs, Mercantile, Yardville, National City (2008), RBC Bank USA (2012) and BBVA USA (2021) — and the Federal Reserve directory shows the seams. Separate records still exist for PNC Bank Ohio, Indiana, Kentucky, Michigan, New Jersey, Pennsylvania and the old Baltimore operation. The BBVA USA integration in particular brought a large block of Alabama, Texas, Arizona, New Mexico, Colorado, California and Florida customers onto PNC under previously unrelated numbers, which is why PNC covers more states in the directory than its branch map alone would suggest.
