American Express Routing Number (2026) — ACH, Wire & Direct Deposit
Use the routing number printed on your own check — the first group of nine digits in the bottom-left corner. It is the only number guaranteed to be right for your account. American Express has more than one, and no list on any website can tell which one is yours. Your American Express app and online banking show it too, and 1-800-446-6307 will confirm it. A wrong routing number sends your money to the wrong institution.
Why American Express has the routing numbers it does
The routing number people look for under "American Express" belongs to American Express National Bank — the Utah-chartered deposit bank behind Amex high-yield savings and personal loans. It has nothing to do with an American Express card account: credit cards do not have routing numbers, and paying a card bill uses your own bank's number, not Amex's. This is one of the most frequently confused searches in US banking.

What is the American Express routing number?
124085066 is the American Express routing number for direct deposit and everyday electronic payments, and it is the same for every customer. It appears in the Federal Reserve directory registered to American Express National Bank.
Is the American Express wire routing number the same as the ACH number?
Not always. ACH routing numbers move direct deposits and bill payments over the automated clearing house, usually settling in one to three business days. Wire routing numbers move same-day funds over Fedwire. Of the 3 numbers the Federal Reserve registers to American Express National Bank, 3 are Fedwire-eligible and 0 are ACH-only. Using an ACH-only number for an incoming wire is one of the most common reasons transfers are returned.
What is the American Express SWIFT code?
American Express publishes the SWIFT/BIC code AEIBUS33 for international transfers. SWIFT codes are not held in the Federal Reserve routing directory, so we cannot verify this against the Fed the way we verify routing numbers — confirm it with the bank before an overseas sender uses it.

Every routing number above was read directly from the Federal Reserve Banks' E-Payments Routing Directory — the FedACH and Fedwire participant directories, which are the systems of record for US routing numbers. We query both directories by institution name, keep only records the Federal Reserve returns under American Express National Bank, and validate every number against the ABA check-digit formula. Numbers that fall out of the directory are removed rather than carried forward. We do not publish a number we could not confirm.
